Pre-harvest Preparation
What is Involved in Pre-Harvest Preparation?
Even though it can look like farmers just let the crops grow on their own prior to harvest, most are not actually this lucky. Instead, farms do a few key things for pre-harvest preparation. Here is what McBee Farms & Cattle Company, a major farm management company, does before harvest time:
As the crops are starting to grow the desired produce, a final spray of fungicide and herbicide gets applied to make sure the produce will be as pest-free as possible. Then, preparation for the planting of a winter cover crop is made.
The company gets its cover crops through an FSA program. This ensures that they have the best ones for whichever region their managed land is in. Cover crops, it says, are the single best way to preserve soil quality through the winter.
