How to Use
Tallow Skincare

Getting the most out of your tallow starts with knowing how to apply it. A little goes a long way — here's everything you need to know to get the best results for your skin.

Step by Step

How to apply it.
The right way.

Tallow behaves differently than conventional moisturizers. Follow these steps to get the most out of every jar.

1

Start with clean, slightly damp skin

Apply tallow right after washing your face or showering while your skin is still slightly damp. The moisture helps the tallow spread more easily and absorb more effectively into the skin's layers.

💡 Pat dry with a towel but leave a little moisture behind
2

Scoop a pea-sized amount

Use your fingertip to scoop a pea-sized amount from the jar — this is all you need for your entire face. Because tallow is so nutrient-dense, a tiny amount goes a long way.

💡 If it feels greasy after 5 minutes, you used too much
3

Warm between your fingertips

Rub the tallow between your fingertips for 5–10 seconds. Your body heat gently melts it from a soft solid into a silky oil — making it much easier to spread evenly.

💡 The warmer it gets the more it feels like a serum
4

Press — don't rub — into skin

Using gentle pressing motions, work the tallow into your skin starting at the center of your face and moving outward. Pressing drives the tallow deeper into the dermis instead of spreading it on the surface.

💡 Pay extra attention to the eye area and lips
5

Let it absorb — don't rinse

Give it 2–5 minutes to fully absorb before applying makeup or going to bed. Tallow is absorbed into the lipid layers — so you should feel minimal residue. If still greasy after 5 minutes, blot gently with a tissue.

💡 It absorbs best when skin is warm after a shower

How Much to Use

Less is always more.

One of the biggest adjustments when switching to tallow is learning to use less product. Here's a visual guide.

Face
~rice grain size
Face + Neck
~pea size

~fingertip amount
One jar lasts 2–3 months with daily use on your face — because you only need a tiny amount each time. If you're going through it faster, you're likely using too much.

Every Skin Type

Tallow works for everyone.
Here's how to tailor it.

Because tallow's fatty acid profile mirrors your skin's own sebum, it works with your skin regardless of your skin type.

🌵

Dry Skin

How to use it

Apply morning and night to damp skin. Focus on cheeks and forehead. You may start with a slightly larger amount — a full pea-size — and scale back as your skin's natural moisture balance is restored.

💦

Oily Skin

How to use it

Start with the tiniest amount — just a half pea-size. Apply at night only for the first 2 weeks. Your skin may produce less oil over time as it recognizes tallow as similar to its own sebum.

☯️

Combination

How to use it

Apply more to dry areas and use a lighter touch in your T-zone. Press rather than rub to avoid dragging product into areas that don't need it.

🌸

Sensitive Skin

How to use it

Patch test on your inner wrist first. Start every other night. Tallow is one of the gentlest ingredients available — but with so few ingredients, if a reaction occurs you'll easily identify the source.

🔴

Acne-Prone

How to use it

Start slowly — every other night. Many acne-prone customers see improvement over time as tallow helps regulate sebum production. Less is more, especially when starting out.

Mature Skin

How to use it

Apply morning and night with gentle pressing motions. Focus on fine lines and the eye area. The fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K in grass-fed tallow are especially beneficial for mature skin.

Best Practices

Do's and don'ts.

A few simple rules that make a big difference in how well tallow works for your skin.

✓ Do This
  • Apply to slightly damp skin for best absorption
  • Start with less than you think you need
  • Warm it between your fingertips before applying
  • Use pressing motions to drive it into the skin
  • Be consistent — give it at least 30 days
  • Store with the lid tightly sealed
  • Use a clean fingertip or small spatula to scoop
✕ Don't Do This
  • Don't apply to completely dry skin
  • Don't use too much — greasy skin means you overdid it
  • Don't rub harshly — press and pat gently
  • Don't use wet fingers in the jar — introduces water
  • Don't expect overnight results — skin takes time
  • Don't store in direct sunlight or heat
  • Don't give up in the first week — there's an adjustment period

Common Questions

Usage questions
we hear most often.

Why does my skin feel greasy after applying?

Almost always this means you used too much. Start with a rice grain-sized amount for your face. Tallow should absorb within 2–5 minutes on damp skin. If it doesn't, blot the excess with a tissue and use less next time.

Can I use it under makeup?

Yes — but give it at least 5 minutes to fully absorb before applying makeup. Use a very small amount and let it sink in. Many customers find their makeup goes on smoother and lasts longer after switching to tallow as their base moisturizer.

My skin is breaking out after I started using it — is that normal?

A brief purging period can happen in the first 1–2 weeks as your skin adjusts. This is normal and typically resolves on its own. If breakouts persist beyond 3 weeks, reduce frequency to every other night and give your skin more time.

How is using it on the body different from the face?

The application is the same — damp skin, warm it up, press it in — but you can use a slightly larger amount on the body since the skin there is thicker. Great for dry knees, elbows, heels, and hands.

Can I mix it with other skincare products?

You can, but we recommend keeping it simple — especially when starting out. Give it 30 days on its own first. If you use a vitamin C serum or retinol, apply those first and let them absorb before adding tallow on top.

How long before I see results?

Most people notice improved hydration and skin texture within the first week. Deeper changes typically show up between 30–90 days of consistent daily use. Give it time — your skin won't recover overnight.
